Somehow this one passed me by because treesaver has been around for a while now. Treesaver.js is a javascript framework for creating magazine-style webpages http://treesaverjs.com/.
The coding reminds me of some of the frameworks I played around with for creating html5 webapps for Android and iPhone and it seems pretty straightforward. My first experiments have resulted in pages where the images are not displayed at all - a placeholder is shown in a different location from intended. I also found that everything was displayed very nicely on my Orange Monte Carlo but looked much more basic on my iPod Touch.
I think this could be an interesting way to distribute texts for my classes though so I am going to explore it a little further. I may have to restrict myself to additional texts as we want our students to pay money for the proper textbook but if it does indeed help save trees then that can only be a good thing!
